about

The Book Beneath My Bed - composed by Caerwen Martin in 2019:

In 2019, we began planning a series of concerts of Glynn Davies’ arrangement of Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade. True to form, we wanted a brand new Australian work as a partner piece for this program. When we asked Caerwen Martin if she would be interested, she immediately said that Scheherazade was her favourite piece. What followed was a flurry of correspondence through the ensemble as Caerwen inquired what our favourite things to read were. Using these as inspiration ‘The Book Beneath My Bed’ was created. The work delves into direct inspiration from Scheherazade as well as horror stories, fantastic creatures, literature, journals and more.

Writing for Inventi is not about writing for their instrumentation, it’s about writing for them as people, as musicians, as friends. They are the voices I hear in my dreams and imagination, and they are the music I write as a gift of myself to themselves. They carry my ideas from stories, through scores, and deliver them back into sound and space. This is the symbiosis of a composer and a performer, and the feeding of dreams into life through the breath of a musician.
